Awareness (Part II)

B. Now, think of your MIND. You use your mind to generate thoughts. This is your computer. But, and this is a very important thing to realize: you are able to see its function, therefore it does not comprehend you.

It is a part of you, just as your body, but it is not you. It isn’t either the place where your Reason resides, or you would not have random, undesirable, or unreasonable thoughts. It is the part of you that thinks. This is not all I have to say about your mind. We will work extensively with your mind, but for now, this is enough.

NOW YOU ARE AWARE OF YOUR MENTAL SELF!

C. You have physical feelings like cold and pain. These are signals of your body that call your attention to vital needs, as in the case of cold, or to situations around you that you are not aware of. Say your knee hurts; it is your body calling your attention to the fact that you are afraid of going ahead with something.

Sickness does not exist; it is all an illusion. I prefer to call “symptoms” of any kind “dis-ease”, not being at ease.  Something is bothering us and we do not see it.

Our body acts up, and a part of us vibrates at the wrong frequency. Then we get the symptoms. Of course, if we do not identify and redress the situation, those symptoms can eventually kill our physical body, in the same way that soldiers, marching over a bridge, create a resonance that makes the bridge collapse.

And what about your emotions? Emotions are sometimes a direct consequence of our thoughts: we remember someone insulting us and we feel anger and hurt all over again.

At other times, they are a result of conditioning. You were taught, a lot of times by example:  “If you hear this, you should feel that”, and the brain, like the computer, once programmed, is obedient. Another way how feelings come forth is through association. An event that happened last year was so traumatic, it created a deep neural avenue in my brain. Today, something happened that reminded me of that event. As a consequence I feel the same I did then. Conclusion: Yes, you feel, but you are not your feelings.

NOW YOU ARE AWARE OF YOUR EMOTIONAL SELF

This is the moment to dismantle another of the BIG cultural lies that are cheating us of our rightful place in this Universe: “I think, therefore, I exist”.

Attributed to Descartes, this one is probably the most pernicious BIG lie, the most hurtful to us, and to Nature. It forces us to identify completely with our thinking process, to the exclusion of everything else. It obliterates the Observer in us, and gives our minds a totally exclusive power over our existence. Not that only but, since we consider the human being the only sentient being in the planet, it separates us from all other beings, and from Nature. Creating the fiction of our superiority to animals and trees, it has given us permission to destroy others thoughtlessly.

It is a lie! We do not exist because we think. We ARE, even when we do not think. Actually, we are MORE ourselves when we are not thinking. The Observer is not the mind, it is the OWNER of the mind. Having said enough about this for the moment, lets proceed with a truly revolutionary concept:

You, the Observer, the one beyond your mind, your body and your emotions, are the one who now will do the work that follows!

Awareness

AWARENESS

I knew I was spending a fabulous time in the right side of my brain. That was great. But I also had to figure out how I had done it.

Yogis torture themselves in many ways, and for very long periods of time; from sitting in the lotus position and not moving for days at a time, to standing in one leg for years until one leg atrophies and the other deforms. Taoist “immortals” also have very brutal ways to overcome themselves, some of which are deadly.

If you put yourself in a situation of self-inflicted pain, or intense discomfort, long enough, you will eventually find the inner resources to escape from it by activating the right side of your brain. That is what abused kids and other victims of torture do to survive! But, come on! We have already created enough pain in our lives by randomly manifesting undesirable situations, to go ahead and create more, intentionally!

All these methods looked too painful for me! It should not be necessary to abuse myself to the extreme just to inhabit a part of myself that was there already. So I wondered… was this the only way?

This is what I found. Yes, you need to:

· Silence your thinking process

· Transform the patterns of fear and all other dysfunctional mental patterns.

· Eliminate the inner “judge”

· Meditate joyfully

Here are the steps necessary to begin with the process. None of them hurts or is uncomfortable. You just have to wish for healing, commit to the process, and give it time.

FIRST AWARENESS EXERCISE:

FINDING OUT WHO YOU REALLY ARE

This exercise has three parts. The duration of this session should be fifteen minutes to half an hour.

Answer these questions one by one. Please take your time. It is important to identify the separate aspects of yourself:

1. Are you your body?

2. Are you your feelings?

3. Are you your thoughts?

You will find that you have a body, you have feelings and you have thoughts.

But behind all of the above, there is still you, the Observer, the one who thinks, the one who feels, the physical one.

The one who can say: I have a body. I have feelings, physical feelings and emotional feelings. I have a mind that generates thoughts.

A. Sit down where you are comfortable. Look at your body, inside and out. Feel the blood running through your veins, feel the air caressing the cilia in your nostrils when you inhale, close your eyes and see the holographic image of your body in the position you are in right now. Pay attention to your feet and the way they stand against the floor, inside of your shoes. Wiggle your toes. For a moment think of how your neck supports your head and how saliva feels sliding down your throat when you swallow.

And now, scan your body. How does it feel? Is there tension? Where/How does it manifest? Is there pain somewhere? Try to hear your heartbeat. How about your scalp? Look at the thousands of hairs growing out all the time. Roll your eyes 180 degrees around their sockets, and your tongue inside your mouth, behind the teeth and over the teeth. Think of your liver, and remember what a fantastic laboratory it is. And your lymphatic system! WOW! All this magnificent body, all those systems of systems are YOURS. Yes, this is your body.

NOW YOU ARE AWARE OF YOUR PHYSICAL SELF!
